Take a tour with us to appreciate the beauty of the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children. Our School was created in the late 19th century. In recent years, the facilities were completely rebuilt to incorporate modern amenities while keeping an historic feel. The School has new classrooms, dormitories and many special areas, such as a swimming pool, modern gymnasium, two fully equipped suites for learning homemaking skills, greenhouse, recreational areas and parent guest rooms.
In 2003, the School for Blind Children expanded into a new facility called the Early Childhood Center. This new building is the site of three programs for young children: preschool classrooms for youngsters aged three to five; an outreach program for toddlers who are blind, and a community-oriented day care center. One outstanding feature of the Early Childhood Center is a sensory garden, where children can explore the outdoors in a rich and creative learning environment.
All facilities are fully accessible, in compliance with ADA regulations. Student safety is assured through use of a sophisticated electronic system.
Our attractive campus is located in Pittsburghs Oakland district. The neighborhood reflects exceptional diversity by mingling residential areas with a large medical complex, museums, cultural venues, and the activity of two major universities.
