Student PhotoThe Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children is incorporated under the Pennsylvania Non-profit Corporation Law for charitable and educational purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

The Corporation is managed by an elected Board of Trustees who serve without compensation. Among the responsibilities of the Board are: developing an institutional plan, a mission statement, establishing policies, and selecting and evaluating the Executive Director/Superintendent.

From its founding in 1887, the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children has been committed to educating individuals who are visually impaired. In particular, the School has made every effort to serve children who have few other opportunities for appropriate training. In line with this, the School has created a unique educational program while being careful not to duplicate the work of other institutions. Today its niche is very special: educating those youngsters who in addition to blindness are disabled by additional serious disorders.

The School formally evaluates the effectiveness of its work on a periodic basis. In assessing its impact on the community, the School seeks to identify unique needs which can be addressed through new programs. In 2006, the Board of Trustees contracted with HarrisInteractive to poll the leaders in school districts throughout western Pennsylvania regarding their opinion of programs offered by the School for Blind Children. The results affirmed that the School is meeting regional needs.

Throughout its history, the organization has been interested in training children who would be under-served. This specialized School has been dedicated to providing comprehensive services to its students.
