The mission Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children is to nurture the unique abilities of individuals with blindness and visual impairment through educational excellence and a lifetime of learning. We are so proud of the exceptional services and individualized care we’re able to provide for this deserving group of boys and girls, but our work would not be possible without the support and dedication of volunteers. Our volunteers have an astounding impact on both students and staff, and in return find personal and unique benefits from their contributions.

Volunteer Application and Requirementsreading to students

We welcome both student and adult volunteers at the School. We ask that volunteers submit the following materials before they begin volunteering at WPSBC:

    • Everyone is asked to submit a brief application on paper
    • Adults 18 years and older must complete:
    • Student volunteers fulfilling program requirements:
      • Must be at least 16 years of age
      • Must submit a letter of recommendation from their supervising teacher

After these steps are completed, we will contact you to set up the next steps. Opportunities are generally limited to Monday through Friday during the school day as school is not in session over the weekend. We ask that all volunteers allow at least two weeks' notice before their requested volunteer start date.

If you’d like more information about volunteering and what that might look like for you, please call (412) 621-0100 (ext. 225) or email cunninghamb@wpsbc.org and we can set up a tour of the School with you.

Our volunteers are a great asset to us. We’re thankful for your interest in assisting our wonderful students and we look forward to talking with you further!

    More Information on Volunteer Opportunities

Most volunteer opportunities are available during the school year and involve direct support to students, though other opportunities are available. There are many exciting events such as Prom, Creative Arts Performances, sporting events, daily movement groups, and so much more that you can become involved in. We’ll also do our best to match available opportunities with your specific interests.prom spa day

We ask our volunteers to keep a reliable, friendly and positive attitude while on campus. Volunteers will never be left alone to attend to students and are never expected to provide basic care for students (e.g. feeding, toileting, bathing, etc.).  Rather, we expect volunteers to be engaging with students and facilitating their participation in whatever activity might be in place while they are here.

We are so appreciative of all our volunteers do for our school, and we’re excited at the opportunity to have you join our expansive volunteer network.
