Local Blind and Visually Impaired Youth Compete in Regional Braille Challenge

Braille Challenge is the only academic competition of its kind in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom for students who are blind or visually impaired. Braille Institute developed the Braille Challenge to promote the importance of braille literacy. Held during Braille Literacy Month, the competition aims to motivate students to hone their braille literacy skills, which are crucial for academic and employment success.

“Braille literacy is a foundational skill that empowers blind and visually impaired individuals to access written information, communicate and participate fully in society. This opens doors to greater opportunities and full participation in the world,” said Holly Russell, Middle Program Principal and Outreach Supervisor at WPSBC. “The Braille Challenge highlights the incredible achievements of these students while emphasizing the importance of braille in promoting independence and lifelong learning.”

This year’s Braille Challenge featured a series of rigorous tests, including braille reading comprehension, spelling and speed. Students participated in both on-site and virtual events, competing individually or within their schools across western Pennsylvania. The competition not only celebrated the skills of young braille readers but also drew attention to the ongoing need to improve braille education and advocacy, ensuring that blind and visually impaired individuals have the tools they need to thrive in society.

By providing a platform for students to demonstrate their abilities, the Braille Challenge encourages young people to develop and refine their skills, reinforcing the vital role braille plays in achieving personal and academic success.

Dr. Heidi Ondek, Superintendent and Executive Director at WPSBC said, “We are thrilled to have hosted this inspiring event and to be part of a movement that fosters a sense of community and pride among young braille users across the nation.”
