LAVI Adult Program
Not long ago, graduating from our school at age 21 was a bittersweet experience. For many graduates, choices for continued support and programming can be extremely limited, and a lack of public funding makes it difficult to find acceptable and appropriate post-school placements.
To meet this community need, WPSBC established an adult day program called LAVI: Learning Adventures for the Visually Impaired in 2011. The development of this initiative is unique among schools for the blind, and we are proud to help provide vital services to an underserved audience.
LAVI is a Licensed Adult Training Facility (ATF) for graduates of WPSBC ages 21 to 59. The program runs year-round at our Oakland campus Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Occupational therapists, physical therapists and speech-language pathologists are available to provide assistive devices of all kinds. In addition, there is a full-time nurse on staff to assist with the program.
Throughout the day, LAVI participants engage in a variety of instructional, vocational and recreational activities adapted to maximize participation. Participants have access to the WPSBC Food Preparation Suite, Instructional Vision Center and Gymnasium. They also take part in many on-campus activities such as crafts, games, creative arts performances, movies, and trips into Oakland.
