STEAM in Motion Summer Camp

STEAM in Motion incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics concepts through interdisciplinary lessons and with adapted materials that are intentionally accessible for students with vision loss.  
 
Who: Students entering grades 3-9 with blindness or visual impairments*
When: August 3-7, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Where: WPSBC Campus, 201 N. Bellefield Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213

STEAM camps for students with blindness and visual impairments are rare, yet incredibly important. This camp provides students with disabilities with the same opportunity to explore and develop skills in STEAM fields as their sighted peers. It's a way to bridge the educational gap and ensure all students have access to the knowledge and experiences that are increasingly important in today’s world. STEAM camp offers hands-on experiences that help students build practical skills and problem-solving abilities.  This boosts their confidence and fosters a sense of independence as they learn how to navigate challenges, use assistive technology, and develop strategies to succeed in different tasks. In addition to academic growth, the STEAM camp provides an important social setting where students are able to form connections with others who share their interests. Friendships are created and fostered, along with teamwork, and learning in a fun, engaging environment. STEAM camps for students with blindness and visual impairments are powerful tools that empower students to pursue their academic and professional dreams, while fostering greater inclusion and accessibility in fields that shape the future. 
 
This camp bridges the gap between inclusion and isolation for students who are blind or visually impaired that are educated in their neighborhood school.  Camp presents an opportunity to bring children who are blind or visually impaired together and build a community of peers with similar learning needs. STEAM activities incorporate skills within the Expanded Core Curriculum to increase student outcomes.
