Overview
At the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children, we strive to provide our students with every opportunity to succeed. Our expansive work impacts infants, school-aged children and adults from 33 counties in western Pennsylvania. From our on-campus students who are blind with multiple disabilities to the hundreds of students with visual impairments throughout the region attending their local schools, to our graduates participating in our adult day program, our commitment to those we serve has no bounds.
With FOCUS: Functional Outcomes-based Curriculum for Unique Students, all WPSBC teachers, therapists and instructional aides work together to implement our specialized curriculum.
Following what is referred to as an integrated service delivery model, each student’s educational team works to incorporate therapies into their everyday school activities.
On-campus living can have a tremendous impact on an individual’s future success, development and overall well-being. We strive to create a home away from home for our residential students.
A Child’s VIEW Inclusive Childcare
Our on-campus early childhood center provides comprehensive inclusive childcare for children with or without visual impairments from the ages of six weeks to five years.
LAVI: Learning Adventures for the Visually Impaired is a Licensed Adult Training Facility for WPSBC graduates ages 21 to 59.
Our Outreach Program provides vital information, consultation and direct services to hundreds of visually impaired students, agencies, school districts, Intermediate Units and families throughout the region.
At our on-campus Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Clinic, enrolled and non-enrolled students are evaluated using a functional vision assessment specific to cortical visual impairment and receive a full evaluation, consultative support and recommendations for programming.
This center provides full evaluations of visual assistive technology needs, consultative support and written programming recommendations for enrolled and non-enrolled students.
